How Often to Schedule Window Cleaning (And If a Plan Makes Sense)

We recently helped a long-time customer decide how often to clean her windows and whether a monthly-billed maintenance plan made sense. Here’s the same guidance for you.

We recently got a call from a customer — let’s call her Susan — who’s been having us clean her windows for years. Susan loves having crystal-clear glass, but she had questions about a new email she received about our maintenance plans.

She told us, “I clicked yes before I really read it, and then I realized it said four visits per year. I really only want three. How often should I do this, and do I have to pay every month?”

If you’ve ever wondered how often you really need professional window cleaning — and whether a subscription-style plan is right for you — this is exactly what we walked through with Susan.

How Often Should You Clean Your Windows Professionally?

The honest answer: it depends on your home, your surroundings, and how picky you are about smudges and streaks. When we build maintenance plans, we usually start with three common schedules:

  • Quarterly (4x per year) – about every 3 months
  • Triannual (3x per year) – about every 4 months
  • Semiannual (2x per year) – about every 6 months

Susan told us four times a year felt like too much for her home, but twice a year wasn’t quite enough. That’s actually a very common sweet spot: three times per year.

Factors That Affect Your Ideal Frequency

When we help a homeowner pick a schedule, we look at a few key things:

  • Location & surroundings – Near a busy road, construction, or farmland? You’ll get more dust and grime, so quarterly cleanings can make a big difference.
  • Trees & landscaping – Trees, sprinklers, and pollen add spots and film. If you see a lot of spots after rain or watering, consider 3–4 cleanings a year.
  • Kids & pets – Little handprints and nose prints on the glass? You may not need more full-house cleanings, but you’ll definitely appreciate a consistent schedule.
  • Windows you actually look through – Big picture windows, kitchen sink windows, and patio doors show dirt fast. If those bug you, err on the more frequent side.
  • Entertaining & resale – If you host holidays or are thinking about selling, a cleaning right before those events is worth building into your schedule.

For most of our customers, we recommend:

  • 2x per year if you’re in a relatively clean area and just want things to look good for spring and before the holidays.
  • 3x per year if you want consistently clear windows without overdoing it — this is exactly what Susan settled on.
  • 4x per year if you’re near traffic, have lots of trees or sprinklers, or you just really love spotless glass.

What Is a Window Cleaning Maintenance Plan, Exactly?

Part of Susan’s confusion came from that email she mentioned. She saw “four visits per year” and “monthly payments” and thought she had accidentally locked herself into something she didn’t want.

Our maintenance plans are designed to fix a problem we’ve had for years: in the old days, we weren’t great about automatically following up every few months, so people had to remember to call us every time. Our new, more automated system does two things:

  • Pre-schedules your visits at the frequency you choose (2x, 3x, or 4x a year).
  • Breaks the cost into even monthly payments so there’s no big surprise bill on cleaning day.

With Susan, we paused to make sure of one thing first: she hadn’t fully completed the enrollment, and no new charges were going to happen until we confirmed what she wanted. We walked her through the options, including adjusting the number of visits.

Do You Have to Pay Monthly?

No. That was one of Susan’s biggest worries. She said, “It’s easier for me to do my bills if I just pay when you come. I’m afraid I’ll forget if it’s just coming out every month.”

If that sounds like you, you’re not alone. Here’s how we usually set things up:

  • Monthly billing option – Good if you like predictable, small payments and don’t want to think about it. Your visits are scheduled automatically.
  • Pay-per-visit option – Good if you like to see a bill tied directly to a service. We still pre-schedule your visits and remind you, but you only pay when we’re actually there.

Either way, you’re not stuck. We can adjust the visit frequency (just like we did for Susan, shifting from four visits a year down to three) and we can update how you’re billed.

Is a Subscription-Style Plan Right for You?

A plan is usually a good fit if you:

  • Like your windows to look clean year-round, not just once in a while
  • Don’t want to remember to call every time they start looking dirty
  • Appreciate appointment reminders and a set schedule
  • Want to lock in consistent pricing and often a small discount

On the other hand, you might prefer to just call when you need us if you:

  • Have very mild build-up and don’t mind waiting when we’re busy
  • Only care about a deep clean before specific events or seasons
  • Really don’t like anything that feels like a subscription

When Susan and I finished our conversation, she decided on three cleanings per year with reminders from us, and to keep paying at each visit instead of monthly. That gave her the peace of mind of a schedule without feeling locked into a billing style she didn’t like.

How to Choose Your Schedule (And Change It Later)

If you’re unsure where to start, here’s a simple approach based on what we see day in and day out:

  1. Pick a starting frequency – 2x, 3x, or 4x a year, based on how quickly your windows look dirty.
  2. Decide how you like to pay – monthly (smaller, predictable payments) or per visit (only when we clean).
  3. Live with it for a year – if you feel like we’re coming too often or not enough, we’ll adjust your plan.

And if you ever click “yes” on an email and then realize it’s not quite what you wanted, you can do exactly what Susan did: just call us. We can check what you actually signed up for, explain how the system works, and customize the schedule to fit your home and your budget.

Clean windows should make your life easier, not more confusing. Whether you want us once, twice, three times, or four times a year, we’ll help you find a rhythm that keeps your view clear and your billing simple.
